Bereavement Support Group

The Bereavement Support Group provides a caring space for individuals navigating the grief journey. Through compassionate discussions and shared experiences, participants find comfort, healing, and hope in their time of loss. The group meets on the first Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the Knapp Room at St. Mark’s, at 179 Main Street. For more information, please call the church office at 315-536-3955.

The Bereavement Support Group started many years ago to support those who are affected by grief, whether they are from the church or from the community. Members of the group share their experiences with others who have suffered a loss of some kind, whether it be death, the end of a relationship, parting from a job, or any other serious crisis. The strength of this group comes from the fact that those who facilitate the group and all the other members of the group know, personally, about deep loss and consequent grief. People who have joined the group because of a loss in their own lives often stay on as facilitators to help new people who join.

The meetings are confidential, and there is a very relaxed atmosphere. Various topics are discussed each month, all related to the members’ needs. The group is open to all who have experienced a loss, whether recently or in the more distant past. Sometimes the pain that loss causes can flare up, ignited by another loss or by holidays. The group leaders recommend two books for those who are touched by grief: One You Love Has Died and How Will I Get through the Holidays, both by James Miller.
